The Melody Hour

"The Melody Hour" was the retitled name of NBC radio's "The Carnation Contented Hour" a 30 minute musical show re-recorded by the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) without commercials. During World War II, particularly, this program was broadcast over AFRS by means of 16" electrical transcriptions or radio discs at 331⁄3 rpm.
Vocalist Buddy Clark with Percy Faith and His Orchestra from the 1940's (5/2011)

I'm sorry to say there has been only one person interested in this collection, of which I have probably 100 shows, so I will not post any more unless the shows are of interest, let me know if they are!

THE MELODY HOUR featuring Buddy Clark, vocals and announcing, with Percy Faith and His Orchestra, broadcast over the Armed Forces Radio Network in the 1940's.  Wally Antuck spent years getting these 16" transcription discs to sound their best.  I used to correspond with Wally from Lansing, Michigan but have not heard from him for years.  This collection represents what must have been years of his work and I think a lot of us will get a kick out of them.  Please email me if you wish to hear more.

  1. Hello! I just found your website through the miracle of Google.

My mother (who is 89) used to listen to the Carnation Contented Hour, and I've been looking for some of those shows as a sort of musical recollection for her.

In particular, I'm interested in the earlier programs (pre 1946) when the format was more of a "good music / concert" format, rather than the post-'46 "pop tunes" format.

If you have any of the earlier programs, I would be interested in hearing about what's available.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your collection with all of us!

  2. Hi there,
Do you know if the Carnation Contented Hour Shows of 06-06-1949 and 27-07-1949 are available anywhere? I'm interested in them because of Doris Day. Do you know what songs were on? Love to hear from you. Peter

  3. Greetings!
I'm finishing my biography of legendary theatre organist George Wright, and it was wonderful hearing GW perform in Program #158 of the "Carnation Contented Hour". FYI, there are a couple of typos in that listing: 1) Funiculi, Funicula 2) Verlye (Mills) THANKS! -Bill Coale georgewrightbook@gmail.com
